I guess I went litterboxing today...

From: Q (puppygirl13@sbcglobal.net) | Date: 2004-09-01 21:11:08 UTC
This morning I printed out the clues to about 10 or so different
letterboxes, grabbed my gear, my dog, and my dog's gear (tennis ball
& leash) and headed out. The first letterbox on my list was the
Repetto Ranch Raid letterbox in Buzzard's Tiburcio Vasquez series. I
found the box with no problem and sat under a shady tree with my dog
to stamp in. While stamping in I noticed a dirty box under another
tree about 50 feet away. It looked out of place since the park is
somewhat of a playground and very pristine. I decided to check it out
once I rehid the letterbox. As I got closer I noticed there were some
flies swarming around the top and I immediately thought there was a
dead animal inside. When my dog, who was about six feet ahead of me,
starting whining as she approached the box, I knew what was in there.
Kittens, four of them. They looked up at me with their blurry little
eyes. I love animals so there was no question in my mind what I would
do. I picked up the box and noticed that it was totally infested with
ants. Fortunately I had a clean box in my car to put them in, and
later today they will be checked out at the vet thanks to a great
rescue group called the Paw'd Squad here in Burbank, CA. The group is
already inundated with homeless cats (one of their members is
fostering over 90 cats in their home!) so it looks like these guys
will be staying with me for a while. Free kittens, anyone?

Please please please spay or neuter your pets. -Q

I think that's it's wonderful how you took care of those kittens, none for me please my last cat disappeared a year ago.

My only question is did you get any more boxes? J/J

I would do the same in a moment! I have 6 cats all rescues, all spayed
and neutered and have an absolute **hatred** .......naw, that probably
isn't even strong enough, for people who would do something like this.
Bravo for you to take on the poor fur babies.

Wow. Four kittens. Most I ever brought home from letterboxing was
one abandoned white rabbit.

While letterboxing that's how I acquired my ferret, just sitting there in the
parking lot....an escapee from home or abandoned.

I guess we both came home with one more "find" than we anticipated, or in
your case four more!

Good for you for doing the right thing.

Do you count their box as a four box series or just one with four stamps. So is it Larry, Moe, Curly and Shemp? Now that sounds like an excuse for a box to me.

The kittens were checked out and guessed to be about 5 weeks old - a
little too young to be separated from their mom, but aside from a
little conjunctivitis, they are in great shape. There are two boys
and two girls, and unfortunately 3 are black (black cats have a tough
time finding good homes.) The other one is grey and he is the
smartest - he's the one I named Buzzard (after the planter of the
letterbox.) On Saturday they will go to a foster who takes care of
kittens, and I'm sure they will miss my dog, whom they have adopted
as their new mommy :) -Q

I just want to second that Black Cat sentiment. I got my Zoelle from the APL about 4 years ago, and I never ever thought I'd get a black cat. But she is the friendliest, sweetest cat around! Although my one friend says she's really a dog, because she likes to have her belly rubbed.

I don't mean black cats aren't great, I just mean that a lot of
people have superstitions about them and there are mean people who
sacrifice them - this comes from rescue groups. They won't adopt them
out around Halloween time either. The woman from Paw'd Squad who
helped me out has 25 black cats that she is fostering, out of like 30
total... I would keep the two girls if I wasn't fostering two cats
already. -Q

tabby/tortie girls and one russina blue boy. Black cats are my
favorites, lol, but I love them all. If I was anywhere near you I
would take them =(

Same here. When we foster we do not adopt out any during the fall
season, and are selective around the holidays, because some people
will get an animal for their kids/spouse/etc as a surprise and then
find out it won't work for what ever reason, and then they dump or
pound the poor babies. All my adoptees have a mandatory return policy,
even 10 years later return to me rather than dump or consign to the
pound.

I have a black cat named Arria. She was named after a Roman woman
whose husband was sentenced to death. At his execution she grabbed a
dagger, ran up to her husband, and said "See, my love, it does not
hurt". My little Arria is very brave :-)

Being born on Halloween makes me love black cats even more. But no cats for me now-my last(a calico) disappeared last year. We're guessing a coyote or fisher cat got her. I do prefer black cats tho have had about 10 of them!
